Lavish crochet emerged alongside other forms of embroidery developed in the nineteenth century. Where paper documents began to be mass produced in the mid-nineteenth century, the popularity of crochet has increased considerably.

From 1937 to 1940, there were competitions for the design and manufacture of hook speed. The beginning of the Second World War saw the craft off, due to shortages of materials available. Heel hook bags were popular during the 1950s. Hook became an art form accepted in the 1960s and more experiments in textile art took place, including international shows fiber. Hook began to regain its popularity in the 1970s, when it became popular to wear hosiery.

In 1994, thirty four million American women knitted or crocheted, in 2002 this figure had increased to thirty eight million.

Hook today is mainly created by the use of soft son to produce clothing and blankets. Although the hook point can be made by machine, it continues to be a job at home.
