Stm BackpackHow To Travel The World: The equipment

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Today I want to share some details of our trip research, particularly related to the equipment that we take, so I decided to share some photos as well.

I did lots of research that led to this trip and I needed a place to record everything. I use the application 37signals "is aptly named Backpack for organizing information.

At first I thought would need a backpack a lot smaller than I really am. I'm 5'8 "and 170 pounds. At the store felt right to go with something like 4000 cubic inches. Once I started adding accessories, clothing and camping gear I realized that I had need much more space. I ended up going to the navy Kelty Red Cloud 5600 with a CPU 5600. inch capacity.

I made the right decision and the packed bag is comfortable, weight about 40 pounds and fits all the stuff I need to take a little room to spare:

Footwear - must be versatile

When it came to shoes, I knew he had to answer all the following 4 criteria: light, comfortable, waterproof (or at least water resistant), and elegant. I was surprised how difficult it was to find a shoe that matched all these. At the end of the day I went with a pair of Merrell Intercept.

Another thing to remember is that we have very few shoes with us so that everything we do wear shoes, must be flexible enough to suit a variety of different outfits.

I have not tried the Vibram rubber sandals Fivefinger and although very comfortable, they are not as practical as I had imagined. The Vibram also require weekly cleaning to prevent them feel weird.

Daypacks - Comfort is key

These packs are generally smaller than you can take with you on day trips while you leave your backpack at the hostel-strong campground. I tried a few different, including the slings. Due to the fact that I take a laptop, camera and a scarf Kindle was big enough. most slings are not as comfortable as a regular backpack. I chose the laptop bag STM

I tried a backpack Pacsafe. These packs a bit heavier and generally have fewer compartments. The big plus is that they are slash-proof and are equipped with wire reinforced straps.

Why would you need a slash-proof, reinforced backpack thread?

It is not uncommon are the least developed countries having your backpack as a great target for petty theft. The thieves might try to get the backpack on your shoulder by tearing and breaking the straps. It will be difficult with wire reinforced straps. The second strategy is to use an exacto knife to reduce considerably the bottom of the backpack so that some of the heavier, and generally the most valuable content down, good luck clearing through metal son.

I'm not sure how the pacsafe I tried had only 2 large compartments and little pockets for small items.

Tents - Find the lightest

One of the heaviest items, I'll be carrying a tent. A tent for 2 people is really too small for 2 people. We chose to go with a tent Marmot Limelight 3 people to fit comfortably 2 people with a little room to spare and a place to put our backpacks.

Make sure the tent is sealed and waterproof. You'll want to get a fingerprint. A fingerprint is a layer of plastic that goes underneath the tent, it is waterproof and easy to clean. Some tents are equipped with one, as ours did.

If you choose to go with a small tent, make sure there is space to store your backpack while you're inside the tent. Some people have 2 small tents vestibule created by the extension of the rain fly. You can usually fit.
